Itinerary

Day One: Friday

Arrive into Great Exuma from Nassau on an early flight (or come sooner and enjoy the Caribbean atmosphere) ready to begin your guided kayaking adventure. We’ll transfer you to our comfortable beachside accommodation for safety briefings, kit checks and a kayak orientation to ensure everyone is fully prepared for the days ahead on the water. As the sun sets, we’ll ease into island life with an informal stroll to local fish shacks, where you can sample fresh Caribbean seafood and get to know your fellow adventurers.

Day Two: Saturday

We will transfer early-doors to the very southern tip of Little Exuma Island to commence the Exuma Files. Today we will paddle alongside Little and Great Exuma before coming onshore for a night on terra firma.

Day Three: Sunday

This is our last day kayaking next to the main island of the Exuma archipelago; tomorrow we will be heading out into the deep blue sea and our desert island hopping adventure really begins.

Day Four: Monday

Today is your first true taste of the expedition, a spectacular sea kayaking traverse through the upper Exuma Cays from Great Exuma towards Norman’s Cay. After final kit prep and boat setup, we’ll head out in ability-based groups, paddling in a grand flotilla into the turquoise waters of the Bahamas.

At around 25km, this opening stage is designed to ease you into expedition life, though tides and winds may add a little bite. Along the way, we’ll stop for a well-earned break, with the chance for a refreshing swim in a hidden sunken cave.

By day’s end, you’ll land on a pristine deserted cay, pull your kayaks ashore and settle into island life with hammocks between the palms, beachside dinner and a spectacular Bahamian sunset.

day five: Tuesday

Today’s sea kayaking adventure takes you deeper into the spectacular Exuma Cays, weaving between Darby and Little Darby Islands through impossibly clear, lagoon-like waters with pure white sand beneath your kayak, like paddling through nature’s own open-air swimming pool.

Around 12km in, we’ll reach the waters off Musha Cay, home to magician David Copperfield, where an unforgettable swim stop awaits at the famous submerged piano sculpture resting on the seabed.

Tonight, your remote island camp comes with some unusual neighbours, the local iguanas, before another unforgettable night in hammocks, falling asleep to the sound of the Caribbean Sea just metres away.

Day Six: Wednesday

This is the biggest mileage day so far, a spectacular sea kayaking stage packed with iconic Exuma highlights. Around 15km in, we’ll reach Staniel Cay, the yachties’ paradise famous for its world-renowned swimming pigs, before leaving the superyachts behind and paddling back into true island wilderness.

From here, we enter the breathtaking Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, a protected marine paradise rich in wildlife and untouched natural beauty. One of the joys of this kayaking expedition is experiencing the constantly changing sea conditions, from calm turquoise lagoons to fast-moving tidal channels between the islands. Expect exciting crossings, fascinating marine features and a real sense of expedition adventure as we continue island-hopping north through this extraordinary chain.

Day Seven: Thursday

Today brings the expedition’s most exhilarating challenge: The Crossing. From the stunning Shroud Cays in the Exuma Land and Sea Park, we’ll leave sheltered waters behind for our longest and most exposed open-water paddle yet, with the chance of bigger swells and a true taste of expedition kayaking. The reward is arrival at breathtaking Hawksbill Cay, one of the most beautiful and remote stops of the journey.

Day Eight: Friday

Our final day may be shorter in the boats, but by now you’ll have earned every mile. After days of paddling, salt, sun and sea, we’ll take on a few final crossings before weaving through the mangroves for a completely different paddling experience.

As Norman’s Cay comes into view, there’s one last unforgettable stop, the famous submerged drug-smuggling plane wreck, where you can snorkel among tropical fish before the final push to the beach.

Day Nine: Saturday

After having breakfast on the private catamaran, the crew will sail you back to Nassau. You can learn to sail and help the crew or you can relax and unwind with the wind whistling through you hair and a cocktail in hand. This is such an incredible way to finish the trip as you sail away from Norman’s Cay across the Caribbean Sea. We wave you goodbye at the marina in Nassau, where our itinerary ends. Talk about finishing on a high. Wow – what an adventure!

FAQs

Is the route likely to change?

The very nature of adventure means that the unexpected can sometimes become part of the journey and that is all part of the experience. While we will always strive to deliver “Plan A”, there may be occasions where operational, safety, weather or environmental factors require us to adapt plans and implement contingency routes or alternative arrangements.

As with all Rat Race adventures, participant safety and overall event delivery remain our highest priorities. We therefore reserve the right to amend routes, itineraries or logistics where necessary, using the experience and judgement of our expedition team to make the best decisions on your behalf in changing conditions. Wherever possible, we will communicate any changes in advance. More often than not, these unexpected moments become part of the adventure itself adding to the stories, memories and unique character of the experience.

How do I enter?

If you find yourself unable to join us on the start line of this event, you are able to transfer your entry into an event credit voucher once for use on a new entry into an event of your choice. Transfers must be requested within the qualifying transfer window to be accepted and processed. Credit vouchers are valid for 12 months from the date of issue. Credit vouchers are exempt from the transfer process. To find out more information and how to submit a request, view of full transfer policy HERE

Can I fundraise for charity?

You are very welcome to fundraise for any charity close to your heart while taking part in the event. Please note, however, that our Charity Refund Offer applies exclusively to participants fundraising for Children with Cancer UK.

Can I go at my own pace?

On the water, we travel as a supported group at a shared expedition pace, led by our kayak guides. Our aim each day is to reach specific camp locations, with everyone working together to make steady progress through the route. If anyone is struggling early on, we can rotate paddlers to share the workload, and once the catamaran joins the expedition, there may be opportunities to rest on board and rejoin later, subject to staff approval.

This is an adventure, not a race, the priority is that you enjoy the journey safely and within your own limits. As we’re operating in a remote marine environment, plans may change due to weather or sea conditions, and our experienced team will always make decisions in the interests of group safety.

Do I need insurance?

Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is compulsory for this event and must cover both general travel and participation in the outdoor endurance activities included within the itinerary. You will also require Evacuation Insurance, which covers emergency extraction and onward medical transport by helicopter or similar should urgent assistance be required in this remote environment.

We strongly recommend arranging your insurance as soon as you enter the event and booking flexible flight options where possible to allow for any unexpected changes. Please ensure your chosen policy specifically covers the activities you will be undertaking during the expedition. There are a number of specialist adventure travel insurers available, including Mann Broadbent.

What kit do I need?

Are kayaks included?

Yes your kayak and all associated equipment is included.

How fit do I need to be?

The great thing about kayaking is that it is a really low impact way of travelling. A good base level of fitness and a couple of technique pointers will serve you well. If you can get one day in a sea kayak in your diary, locally to where you live, before you join us - even better.

Can I use Rat Race credit or a discount code on my Exped entry?

Yes, Rat Race credit can be used towards the cost of any Expedition booking. However, discount codes and promotional offers cannot be applied to Expeditions. Unlike our larger events, Expeditions operate with very small group sizes and involve significant logistical costs, specialist guides, local operators, accommodation and transport arrangements. As a result, margins are considerably tighter and we are unable to offer additional discounts on these trips.
