Cycle on the black ash fields of Iceland

This other worldly landscape and lack of civilisation will make you feel like you've been dropped on another planet with your bike.

Iceland_9

Hike the Laugavegur Trail

The trekking is breath-taking, with our section taking in some of the famous Laugavegur Trail.

Iceland_11

Relax in natural hot springs

Iceland is famous for it's natural volcanic hot springs, the perfect place to recharge.

Iceland_4

Finish at the plane wreck on the black sand beach

In 1973 a United States Navy DC plane ran out of fuel and crashed on the black beach at Sólheimasandur, in the South Coast of Iceland. That's where our finish line is.

Itinerary

Iceland_12

DAY ONE: Sunday

Meet at Fosshotel Reykjavik hotel at 0800. Load up all luggage and bikes and travel to Blönduós. On arrival, we will check you into your rooms before enjoying a light lunch together. It will then be time to build your bike before our event briefing, registration and admin activities commence. Once this is done, the time is yours to relax and enjoy the quaint charm of Blönduós before we eat dinner and head to bed, ready for the adventure to begin the following morning!

Iceland_24

DAY TWO: Monday

After a hearty breakfast and an early start, we will cycle inland beside the glacial river Blanda on good roads and good gravel tracks. Once we leave the coastal area, we leave the tarmac behind for good! We will climb gradually until the scenery gives way to classic Icelandic ash terrain. This is a big day out on the mileage on this terrain, but it builds gradually and will form a very good intro to Icelandic riding and to the unique weather conditions.

Iceland_26

DAY THREE: Tuesday

We have another day on the bikes today, passing between the two icecaps of Hofsjokull and Langjokull and heading towards the Kerlingarfjoll Highland mountains, using gravel roads and tracks. We finally reach our overnight location which is a solitary hut looming with dramatic glacial and mountain backdrops. In fact today, we will go past the hut and continue the riding until we reach the river, which is the put-in for tomorrow’s river stage. Once you have finished today’s stage, you will drop your bike here at the river and be transported back to the hut by our event vehicles. Whilst this means a little more riding today, past the hut, it sets you up well for what is another long (and hugely epic) day tomorrow on the river and beyond.

Iceland_21

Day Four: Wednesday

After an early breakfast, we’ll head to the river for an exhilarating packrafting stage on the Pjórsá, supported by expert local guides. Travelling in small groups, you’ll descend the river in a mix of packrafts and communal rafts before exiting upstream of the dramatic Dynkur Foss waterfall, where you’ll transition out of river gear and onto the bikes for an epic 74km cycle to our overnight stop.

As with any true Iceland expedition, flexibility is key, river levels, snowmelt and weather conditions may require changes to the plan, with robust alternative options ready if needed.

DAY FIVE: Thursday

Today is arguably the highlight of the biking and certainly the most technical. Expect a spectacular mix of gravel tracks, steep climbs, thrilling descents, river crossings, singletrack and an epic 970m summit, all set against Iceland’s extraordinary landscapes of moss-covered steam vents and the famous multicoloured rhyolite mountains.

After around 100km of unforgettable riding, including a section on the iconic Laugavegur Trail, we reach Emstrur, where we’ll leave the bikes before transferring back to our overnight hut, ready to return in the morning for the trekking stage.

Iceland_7

DAY SIX: Friday

It’s an early start for what is, quite simply, a monster day, and one you’ll never forget. Beginning at Emstrur with lightweight packs, you can choose to run or trek through the breathtaking landscapes of Þórsmörk, with a single pit stop along the way in some of Iceland’s most spectacular scenery.

Then comes the big climb ascending between dramatic glacier tongues to a mountain pass before descending into the stunning Skógá Valley, where an endless procession of waterfalls builds towards the mighty Skógafoss on Iceland’s south coast. From there, we’ll transfer a short distance to tonight’s well-earned accommodation.

Iceland_3

DAY SEVEN: Saturday

After breakfast, we have a very quick 13km (8 miles) on the bikes via the main Iceland ‘ring road’ (not much traffic, especially at this time of the morning). This brings us to a turnoff, which then will bring us on a gently descending track to journey’s end at the famous plane wreck at Solheimasandur. After some pictures, a celebratory tot of local liquor and some warm words of conclusion, we will ride the 3km back to the transports and saddle up for the journey back to Reykjavik.

FAQs

Is the route likely to change?

The very nature of adventure means that the unexpected can sometimes become part of the journey and that is all part of the experience. While we will always strive to deliver “Plan A”, there may be occasions where operational, safety, weather or environmental factors require us to adapt plans and implement contingency routes or alternative arrangements.

As with all Rat Race adventures, participant safety and overall event delivery remain our highest priorities. We therefore reserve the right to amend routes, itineraries or logistics where necessary, using the experience and judgement of our expedition team to make the best decisions on your behalf in changing conditions. Wherever possible, we will communicate any changes in advance. More often than not, these unexpected moments become part of the adventure itself adding to the stories, memories and unique character of the experience.

Can I go at my own pace?

Yes, there are cut-offs on the event, but these are based purely around the available daylight hours each day. Our aim is to help everyone complete the adventure, so if you fall behind the required pace and are unlikely to reach base before nightfall, our crew will transport you forward by event vehicle. You are then welcome to restart again the following day. This is not an event where missing a cut-off means your adventure is over.

What is Refund Protect?

If you opt to pay in instalments and transfer your entry before the entry cost is full paid you will be liable to ensure the cost of Refund Protect has been fully covered. This total amount will be deducted from any Rat Race credit due through the transfer process or you will be invoiced by Rat Race for the outstanding amount as Rat Race have paid this on your behalf to Refund Protect at point of entry.

Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is compulsory for this event and must cover both general travel and participation in the outdoor endurance activities included within the itinerary. We strongly recommend arranging your insurance as soon as you enter the event and booking flexible flight options where possible to allow for any unexpected changes. Please ensure your chosen policy specifically covers the activities you will be undertaking during the expedition. There are a number of specialist adventure travel insurers available, including Mann Broadbent.

What kit do I need?

What bike do I need?

We believe that the optimum machine for this route is a hardtail or full-sus mountain bike. It is not to be attempted on a gravel bike as whilst some of the route is appropriate for such machines, much is not. This is proper adventure mountain biking and the steed or choice is, accordingly a mountain bike.
The ideal bike is a hard tail, with 29” wheels, however any mountain bike will do as long as it is in good working order. There is a slither of tarmac at the beginning of day 1 and a few km of tarmac at the very end also. Other than that, it is gravel tracks, ash, singletrack and other off-road terrains.
If you are renting from us, these are excellent hardtail mountain bikes flown in to the country from our Rat Race UK fleet. The bike rental is priced at £790 and can be selected when you enter or later in the process (Please note that it is subject to availability and is very popular each year, so book your rental bike early to avoid disappointment).

How do I navigate?

We want you to concentrate on the views and the hard work of putting one foot (or wheel or paddle!) in front of the other. So we don’t want you to be staring at maps or navigational aids any more than you have to. There is no formal waymarking (i.e. signs) used on this event. Instead, we will provide and then be asking you to download a route file that you will be able to download onto your smartphone or GPS device. You will follow this ‘line’ when on foot and can use this as a back-up at all times. You may use your own device or rent one from us.

We will then augment this with some marshalled junctions or key turning points on the trekking stages. For the kayak stages, well, these are guided stages and as long as you point downriver, you’re going the right way! On the bike, there really are not many junctions or route choices. Trust us, it will be hard to get lost! We will marshal key junctions with our vehicles and staff, also. Don’t worry – you won’t get lost. But if you do – support is never far away.
