MORE INFORMATION:
We've been in the business of putting on great, beginner friendly ultramarathons since 2012, our long established and much loved classic adventure: The Wall is our heritage ultramarathon and continues to go from strength to strength. Fully waymarked, fully supported and stocked with more pork pies than a hungry butchers it is designed to be completed at 3mph and boasts a 90% completion rate year on year.

Every year in June we see the disbelief when people cross that line and realise they've just completed 70 miles in one go. Then once the pain has subsided and people can use the stairs again, the question on their lips is often - what's next?

When you've ticked off 70 miles the next logical distance for those who want to go further is the heralded 100 miles, a bucket list achievement for many. Strict cut-offs, strict rules, qualifying times, map reading skills and the need to prove your running history is a barrier to signing up for many 100 milers for those who just simply want to have a crack at this distance and see how they fair. So we designed one that anyone can enter, with a moving completion pace of just 2.5mph making it accessible to walkers and runners alike. We've built in the same fantastic level of support we have at The Wall and supersized it for another 30 miles. You don't need to navigate, you just follow our arrows. We'll move bags for you, allow support runners at certain locations and help get you back to the car park at Bamburgh when it's all over. This is the 100 miler for people who don't do 100 milers.

If you do wish to use gels or similar sports nutrition products, You should plan to bring your own and be self-contained. Don’t forget, we offer our drop bag service, so if you wish to lighten then load by sending a stash forward, we have support in place to help you with that.

The nature of an adventure is that sometimes, the uncertain becomes certain! That is all part of the adventure. Whilst we will always strive to pull off ‘Plan A,’ it may well be that for any one of a number of reasons, we cannot do so and we ned to wheel put Plan B, C or D. We do line up contingencies for many eventualities of course. But it is worth knowing that the course may change if we deem it prudent for your safety or for other operational or weather-based reasons and we must always reserve the right to do so. Ultimately our skill and judgement in organising such events is part of why you are entering, so we must be able to exercise this on your behalf where we deem it necessary. If we do have to make a route change, we will strive to inform you in good time (if that is possible). Usually, these unforeseen changes simply add to the flavour of proceedings and provide for a good story to tell at day’s end!
Click ‘Buy Event Voucher’ and go through the sign-up process, you’ll then be issued with an event voucher which will automatically reserve you a place in the event you have chosen.
Rat Race require you to be over 18 on the day of Registration for this adventure.
At Rat Race we are determined to get you on the start line even when life throws up its own obstacles! If you find yourself unable to join us on the start line of this event, you are able to transfer your entry into an event credit voucher once for use on a new entry into an event of your choice, whether that be the same event a year later or a completely new adventure! Transfers must be requested within the qualifying transfer window to be accepted and processed. For Rat Race 100 this is 1 calendar month before the date of the scheduled on the day Event Registration. Credit vouchers are valid for 12 months from the date of issue. Credit voucher are exempt from the transfer process. To find out more information and how to submit a request, view of full transfer policy HERE.
You can view the mandatory kit list below. Any changes to this kit list will be communicated to you via email.
You don't have to run for charity, but if you choose to you are more than welcome to fundraise for any cause close to your heart.. If you choose to run for our partner charity Children with Cancer UK and raise the target amount for this event per person (£750), you can receive a refund of your entry fee up to the amount of £300.

We’ve put together a fantastic new instalment plan that allows you to choose how many months you want to spread the cost of this brilliant adventure over. You can pay it off all in one go or spread it over as many months as you like, totally interest free. There is no credit check required to use this facility. When you sign up to the instalment plan Rat Race will then set up a reoccurring payment and your card will be debited on the same date each month. If there is an error with your payment you will receive reminders from Stripe, our payment provider, and also the Rat Race customer service team. After 3 attempts to contact you if the outstanding balance remains unpaid we will assume you wish to cancel your entry and will withdraw you from the event and you will not be eligible to enter our transfer process and no monies will be refunded.

Add Refund Protect to your booking during purchase and receive a full refund of your entry fee if you are unable to attend the event due to a qualifying unforeseen circumstance. PLEASE NOTE this protection is with our 3rd party partner Refund Protect and NOT Rat Race. In the event you make a refund application this is administered by the Refund Protect customer service team, Rat Race are not privy to the application and cannot intervene on your behalf to influence the outcome determined by their team.

To check the full list of qualifying unforeseen circumstances that are protected please click here to view Refund Protect terms and conditions.

To add Refund Protect (administered by a 3rd party) to your Rat Race booking simply select this option when presented during the entry process. Refund Protect cannot be added retrospectively. Rat Race will then send you name and booking details to Refund Protect in order to protect your transaction with them. If you opt to pay in instalments and transfer your entry before the entry cost is full paid you will be liable to ensure the cost of Refund Protect has been fully covered. This total amount will be deducted from any Rat Race credit due through the transfer process or you will be invoiced by Rat Race for the outstanding amount as Rat Race have paid this on your behalf to Refund Protect at point of entry.

Bamburgh to Edinburgh: Registration is on 18th July 2025 / 3rd July 2026 12pm - 10pm at Bamburgh Pavillion (right next to the castle!) local parking is available nearby.
Edinburgh to Glamis: Registration is on Friday 24th July 2026 12pm - 10pm in Edinburgh city centre.
Your bib number and bag tags will posted to you in advance (UK residents) International participants will need to collect theirs from Registration. You will need to bring your mandatory kit with you to be checked to Registration and to pick up your tracker from Open Tracking. More information on getting to the castle can be found here
Sorry we cannot accommodate dogs on the route.
The Rat Race 100 is designed to be completed at a 2.5mph moving pace and is designed for walkers and runners to take part - this factors in 8 hours of stopping/strategy sleeping along the way in the 48 hour time limit. There are 8 Pit Stops on the route with designated places after 60 miles that you can sleep.
There is no requirement to be able to self navigate on this course, we will waymark the entire 100 miles with our bright orange arrows. We will also have marshals in place at key locations and roving event vehicles. No maps, no compasses, no gpx files to follow!
The nature of the Rat Race 100 is that it is a one way journey and therefore you have to plan your logistics a bit if you do not have supporters with you.
Bamburgh to Edinburgh:
We will operate an event car park in Bamburgh where you can park your car from the morning of the 19th July 2025 / 4th July 2026 until the afternoon of the 22nd July 2025 / 7th July 2026. We will be operating post-event bus transfers back to this car park from Edinburgh city centre. Spaces are limited so make sure you book your seat on the bus if you need to use this service.

Edinburgh to Glamis:
Edinburgh - Glamis lends itself well to utilising public transport. We would recommend arriving on the train into Edinburgh city centre on Friday 17th July 2026 and staying centrally. This will place you in easy distance of Registration and the start line. If you are driving we recommend finding a long term car park in the city centre.
We will operate a free shuttle from the finish to Dundee train station. This will run on a loop so please expect to wait at busy times as it is a 1 hour round trip. There will also be parking available at the finish so supporters can pick you up. We will operate coaches back to Edinburgh city centre which will run at set times post-event. You can book yourself a seat on one of these coaches from your Rat Race account.

We will collect you via the Sweeper vehicle and move you forwards on the course. We are unable to transport you backwards i.e back to the start. If you have a support team they can come and pick you up, you must ensure you return your tracker to a Rat Race crew member in both instances.
Some of the kit listed is to help you have a safe experience and have the best chance of finishing. Some of this kit is to ensure that if you are unable to continue without our assistance, we can be confident of you having the equipment required to keep you as comfortable as possible whilst you wait for assistance. Spot checks are conducted throughout the event and you will not be able to continue if you are found to not be carrying the requisite items.

MANDATORY KIT LIST
-
Running pack/vest or other appropriate method of carrying your kit. We recommend our Great Glen bag that is tried and tested! 10-20L is a good size pack to aim for. Any smaller, you may struggle to fit all of the required mandatory kit. Any bigger, you are likely to be carrying too much!
-
Running shoes or walking boots. The terrain along the route is predominantly trail from the start up until the 100km mark, then almost entirely road for the remainder of the course.
-
Hydration bladder or bottles. A minimum 2L carrying capacity is required, 3L is recommended (IE a 2L hydration bladder and 2 x 500ml soft flasks.
-
Basic first aid kit containing a triangular or conformable roller bandage, assorted adhesive dressings including at least 1 100mm x 90mm. Gauze or gauze bandage and paracetamol.

-
Method of payment for local shops (card/cash/apple pay)
-
Tracker (supplied)
-

RECOMMENDED KIT
This kit is not mandatory but more 'common sense' additions that we recommend to give you the very best chance of reaching Edinburgh!

-
Additional Warm layers – As you know, waterproof jacket, trousers and 1 warm layer are mandatory as a minimum. Depending on your pacing strategy and your susceptibility to the cold, it may be worth packing additional layers. This is particularly applicable to those planning on taking sleep breaks, as you’re likely to feel very cold after resting and then dragging yourself back up and out to go again after a broken sleep! Based on our experience on The Wall (70 miles) the most common reason that people retire is that they get too cold. Regardless of the weather through the day, you are likely to feel cold at 2am when you’re feeling tired. Make sure that you have a warm jacket that packs down small, it might be the piece of kit that helps you get to the finish. This is particularly prudent if you are planning to walk, the Test Pilots for this event who walked the whole thing in 46 hours in the height of summer with fantastic weather had down jackets on all through the night.
-
Sunglasses
-
Blister treatment kit. Our paramedics will prioritise live cases and they are not a foot care service, we recommend that you know how to treat your feet if hot spots and blisters do occur and that you are self-contained.
-
Anti-chafe lubricant  - apply liberally and everywhere...
-
Spare socks – have a pair in every drop bag just in case.
-
Running / Trekking poles – These are totally optional, but they can be a huge help and they come highly recommended by us. Whether you are a runner, a walker, or somewhere between the two, and regardless of whether or not you have experience using poles right now, it is our advice that everyone should pack them. Poles can be extremely helpful in ‘Plan A’ situations, IE supporting you on the ascents, descents and helping with balance on any uneven ground, even when your body feels relatively fresh. Check our our blog post on the benefits of poles and technique pointers.

Where poles can become a lifesaver is in Plan B situations. IE, if you were to become injured and you need the extra support, or even just to help counter the fatigue when your legs are the most exhausted they’ve ever been, and you may be nursing the onset of overuse injuries. The point is, even if you don’t use poles on a ‘normal run or hike’, remember, finding yourself 60 miles down with another 40 miles to go is not ‘normal’ for most people! You may discover a new found fondness for poles on a 100 miler…

-
Headphones - when the going gets tough the tough listen to music! Please ensure these are NOT noise cancelling and that you can hear the environment, traffic and people around you. Headphones should be switched off or removed when you are running on roads.
CHANGES TO KIT LIST
We reserve the right to update and amend this mandatory kit list. Any changes will be emailed to participants in advance of the event.

The mandatory kit is important for several reasons:

-
It helps you to help yourself should you have a problem.
-
We are in this together and you may need to assist others if they have a problem.
-
In the case of an incident our Race Control and Medical teams will make decisions based on the knowledge that you all have this equipment on you.
-
Carrying the kit is a requirement for everyone and hence provides an equal and fair challenge.
-
It is part of our risk assessment process that is shared with insurers. Your insurance may be invalid if you do not follow our advice.
-
If your lack of kit preparation contributes to making an incident more serious, then you may be avoidably drawing resources from our medical team and the emergency services at the expense of others.
-
Without the kit you will be unable to complete registration. If during the race you are not carrying the mandatory kit then you will be disqualified and removed from the event.

WATERPROOFS AND BIVVY BAG NOTES
Our kit list includes waterproof trousers and jackets with TAPED SEAMS as a minimum standard. See photograph of what a taped seam look like HERE so you know what our team will be checking. There is also a need for an emergency bivvy bag. Blankets are NOT acceptable as these do not meet the needs of having to survive when injured and immobile in bad weather while waiting for assistance.
