Saudi Arabia – Lawrence of Arabia

24 – 29 February 2028

Deep in the Saudi desert near Abu Na’am lies a rusting 100-year-old locomotive on the legendary Hejaz Railway, the historic line that once connected Damascus to Medina and became famous through the exploits of T.E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia. Built during the Ottoman Empire to transform the perilous 40-day pilgrimage to Medina into a journey of less than a week, the railway later became a key target during World War I and was immortalised in Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Our adventure begins in the holy city of Medina before heading deep into the Arabian desert, where we’ll ride fatbikes through dramatic mountains, vast sands and forgotten railway tracks to reach the abandoned train itself, retracing a remarkable route through history.

Tonga Test Pilot 1

Tonga Swim Safari - Female only

9 - 16 September 2028

Tonga is rightly known as a tropical paradise nestled deep in the South Pacific. The island archipelago of Vava’u lies around 250km to the north of the main Tongan island of Tongatapu and consists of dozens of coral-fringed islands sparkling in an almost-too-turquoise-to-believe sea. If you ever conjured an idea of a tropical island paradise, this is it. It is also on the migratory route of humpback whales and in August and September there is the extraordinary opportunity to perhaps swim with these gentle giants of the marine world.

Our new swimming-based concept is totally new ground for Rat Race and where better to give it a first run-out than in this perfect swimming paradise. In typical Rat Race fashion, this is off the beaten track and relatively unexplored for swimming. We will offer a boat-supported selection of swims of various lengths, circumnavs of small islands and point-to-point swim ‘journeys’ between deserted tropical islands will feature heavily, all the while well supported with excellent safety cover. The format is very expeditionary in nature and will form a journey concept in the trademark Rat Race way, swimming a route and achieving objectives and destinations, versus a more traditional venue-based approach. Always different, always Rat Race!

This trips is designed to suit all levels, not just experienced open-water swimmers. So if you want to dip your toe in the water with a brand new swim trip in the Rat Race style this is the one for you!

Standing at 6,893m, Nevado Ojos del Salado is the highest volcano on Earth and the second-highest mountain in South America. Unlike most major peaks, it is just possible to ride a mountain bike from near the summit, creating what may be the greatest descent on the planet: almost 350km from the high Andes all the way to sea level. This is one of the most ambitious adventures we have ever conceived. With only a handful of riders ever attempting it, the expedition involves extreme altitude, extensive acclimatisation, carrying bikes high on the mountain and technical riding in some of the world's highest terrain. If conditions align, we'll attempt an extraordinary summit-to-sea descent; if not, simply reaching and riding on Ojos del Salado will still be a remarkable achievement in one of the most remote and spectacular mountain environments on Earth.

FAQs

How is a Test Pilot different to an Expedition or Bucket List adventure?

Test Pilot is exactly what it sounds like, a true expedition test. We arrive with a planned route, but the mission is to explore it as a team, test assumptions, adapt in real time, and shape contingency plans if the unexpected happens.

This is proper adventure travel in its rawest form. You won’t be turning up to a polished, finished product, you’ll be part of the small pioneering team helping build it. The routes you help test could one day become iconic Rat Race adventures like Race to the Wreck or Mongol 100.

If you’ve ever wanted to be a real-life explorer, trailblazing extraordinary journeys that others may follow for years to come, this is your chance.

How do I sign up?

Click 'Enter' and sign into your Rat Race account and follow the sign up procedure. If you need any assistance please drop the customer service team an email on events@ratrace.com

How old do I need to be?

Rat Race require you to be over 18 to be a Test Pilot.

Can I transfer out?

If you find yourself unable to join us on the Test Pilot you can transfer out up to 20 weeks prior to the departure date, you are able to transfer your entry into an event credit voucher once for use on a new entry into an event of your choice. Transfers must be requested within the qualifying transfer window to be accepted and processed. Credit vouchers are valid for 12 months from the date of issue. Credit vouchers are exempt from the transfer process. Please ensure you have read the Test Pilot terms and conditions here.

How much do they cost?

The Test Pilots all vary in cost depending on which trip you choose, you can see the full price information in the Test Pilot description. You can split the cost of your Test Pilot entry interest free using our instalment plan, which will run up to 3 months prior to your chosen departure date.

Do I need any experience?

We welcome people from all walks of life on our Test Pilot trips, and that variety is part of what makes them so special. As these are genuine route-testing adventures, it’s important for us to experience the journey with a broad mix of participants, just as we would on a future live event.

The most important quality in a Test Pilot is not speed or competitiveness, but teamwork. You’ll need patience, adaptability, empathy and a willingness to support the group, because you’ll often spend long days together in remote places solving problems as a team.

This is not a race, and it’s not suitable for highly competitive mindsets. The goal is simple: complete, not compete.

How many people go on Test Pilots?

We typically take between 4 and 10 people on a Test Pilot, depending on the location and the nature of the challenge. Keeping the team deliberately small creates a far more immersive experience, everyone gets to know each other properly, and it gives us the flexibility to adapt routes, distances or plans as the adventure unfolds.

This is completely different to a normal event. It’s raw, exploratory and collaborative, more like joining an expedition team than entering a race. And that’s what makes it so special.

What is Refund Protect?

Add Refund Protect to your booking during purchase and receive a full refund of your entry fee if you are unable to attend the event due to a qualifying unforeseen circumstance. PLEASE NOTE this protection is with our 3rd party partner Refund Protect and NOT Rat Race. In the event you make a refund application this is administered by the Refund Protect customer service team, Rat Race are not privy to the application and cannot intervene on your behalf to influence the outcome determined by their team.

To add Refund Protect (administered by a 3rd party) to your Rat Race booking simply select this option when presented during the entry process. Refund Protect cannot be added retrospectively. Rat Race will then send you name and booking details to Refund Protect in order to protect your transaction with them. If you opt to pay in instalments and transfer your entry before the entry cost is full paid you will be liable to ensure the cost of Refund Protect has been fully covered. This total amount will be deducted from any Rat Race credit due through the transfer process or you will be invoiced by Rat Race for the outstanding amount as Rat Race have paid this on your behalf to Refund Protect at point of entry.

Do I need insurance?

Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is compulsory for Test Pilots and must cover both general travel and participation in the outdoor endurance activities included within the itinerary. You will also require Evacuation Insurance, which covers emergency extraction and onward medical transport by helicopter or similar should urgent assistance be required in this remote environment.

We strongly recommend arranging your insurance as soon as you enter the event and booking flexible flight options where possible to allow for any unexpected changes. Please ensure your chosen policy specifically covers the activities you will be undertaking during the expedition. There are a number of specialist adventure travel insurers available, including Mann Broadbent.

Are Test Pilots safe?

Rat Race is audited and accredited to the prestigious BS8848 expedition safety standard, with robust emergency protocols and response systems in place across all adventures. Participant and staff safety is our highest priority. Every trip is supported by detailed in-country risk assessments, qualified staff with adventure-specific competencies, high-level first aid capability, and 24/7 medical and emergency response support. In the event of an incident, our teams are trained to deliver immediate, life saving care, coordinate evacuation where needed, and follow comprehensive medical procedures. We’ll also advise you on the required travel insurance for your trip and request proof of cover before departure.

Are the dates confirmed?

Test Pilot dates are confirmed with you 6 months prior to the advertised departure date and we advise you do not book any travel until you have received written confirmation from us in your welcome email.

What happens after I enter?

In your confirmation email there is a link to complete a vetting form, this is a simple form asking all about you so we can ensure you fully understand the Test Pilot programme. If you are new to Test Pilots this will be followed up by contact with the assigned Project Manager where you can ask questions about what being a Test Pilot is like. If you have previously been on a Test Pilot you will be able to indicate this on the form.

When will more information be available to me?

Due to the nature of Test Pilot trips, the information for each trip will be provided as it takes form. The overview for each event and an idea of 'Plan A' is laid out on the website with what we aim to achieve in terms of the event and disciplines involved, alongside a proposed trip date.

In the early stages of planning, this will be the only information available to you, all you need is a sense of adventure and a little flexibility incase our plans have to change!

The Project Manager will be in touch with you when more information is available, but this will be much later than a fully-fledged event. The planning for each trip takes place over a number of months and therefore the finer details are not yet in place. Project Managers may therefore not be able to answer specific itinerary/route/accommodation queries at an earlier stage.

How can I stay connected on my adventure?

You can stay connected throughout your adventure with Holafly eSIM. It's a quick and hassle-free way to get reliable mobile data as soon as you land, so you can navigate, keep up to date with the event WhatsApp group (link shared in 1 week to go email) and share your photos during the trip!

You can bag 5% off your Holafly eSIM by purchasing your e-sim HERE. Your Rat Race discount is applied automatically when using this link.
