REGISTRATION & PRE-EVENT LOGISTICS

Thursday: Arrival & Ferry Embarkation

Our gateway to the Shetland Isles is Aberdeen. To ease logistics, we will be meeting at Union Square Car Park, 148 Market St. Aberdeen, AB11 5PP

This location is just a short walk away from the Train Station, Bus Station and Ferry Terminal. There is ample parking for anyone being dropped off by friends, family or taxi, as well as quick and easy walk routes from public transport connections. We will nominate a base (likely Starbucks!) and greet you to load your bags up into the event vehicles. The area is well serviced by shops and cafes. Once everyone is accounted for and all kit is loaded, we will head to the ferry terminal together.

Please arrive at Union Square car park from1400, no later than 1530. This ensures we have ample time to check everyone in, complete a visual kit check, and load all heavy overnight baggage into the event vehicles before boarding.

Departure: The NorthLink ferry departs promptly at 17:00. Late arrivals cannot be accommodated as the ferry schedule is completely rigid.

ONBOARD REGISTRATION

The ferry journey to Lerwick is a 12-hour overnight crossing. We will establish a small registration station in a designated communal space on board. During this time, we will:

  • Issue your Adventure Pack and event stash.
  • Securely fit your satellite tracking device to your running pack.
  • Conduct a brief 1-to-1 medical screening with our event medic.

Event Briefing - A comprehensive event briefing will take place on Wednesday evening on board the ferry (weather and noise levels permitting). If conditions are too loud, the briefing will be held at our first morning drop-off point.

Crucial Packing Reminder: When arriving at Aberdeen, please keep your Race Day Bag/Running Pack fully packed (as if you were stepping onto the trail) and separate from your hold luggage. You must bring this pack onto the ferry with you. We cannot issue your tracking device if your pack is packed away in the event vehicles.

Food, Drink & Pit Stop Provisioning

Catering Schedule

The first meal provided by Rat Race will be the evening meal on registration day. Thereafter, all breakfasts, Pit Stop lunches, and evening meals will be provided by Rat Race, with the exception of the final day in Lerwick, where everyone will be off exploring at their own leisure.

Breakfasts: A hearty mix of hot cooked items and continental selections designed to fuel long endurance days. On early-departure mornings, high-energy "grab-and-go" options will be provided.

Evening Meals: A substantial dinner served at our overnight accommodation. Additional courses and drinks are to be covered individually.

Pit Stops

Pit Stops will be held roughly every 15km to 20km along the daily route (typically 3 locations per day depending on road access).

Stocking: All stops will be fully loaded with water and a mixture of sweet and salty snack options. Some Pit Stops will have hot water for tea/coffee provision.

Mid-Day Stop: The designated mid-day Pit Stop will feature more substantial food items such as wraps, sandwiches, or rolls as an ‘on-the-go’ lunch offering.

Dietary Requirements

You will have the opportunity to formally log all allergies, medical dietary restrictions, and lifestyle choices (e.g., Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten-Free) via your digital Participant Information Form prior to the event. As long as we are informed of requirements in advance, we will do our best to cater for everyone.

Personal Nutrition Tip: While our stops are fully stocked, if your stomach relies on specific sports gels, powders, or bars, please bring them with you. Everybody should have a personal stash including a few of their favourite go-to’s. You can carry your daily supply in your race vest and store bulk spares in your Pit Stop bag. If you have strict requirements due to severe allergy or niche preferences, we always recommend bringing a good backup supply of your own.

ROUTE

The Shetland Tip to Toe route is a magnificent, sometimes wild, and incredibly varied journey spanning approximately 100 miles / 161km over 3 active days. You will run through and into towns, along stunning coastlines, and across some of the more wild and remote sections of the islands.

TERRAIN

The terrain is varied, featuring a mixture of minor public roads, established coastal paths, rugged double-tracks, and stretches of completely trackless, peat-boggy, and heather-clad moorland. The latter sections offer a true Scottish wilderness experience!

NAVIGATION

This event is completely self-navigated. The course WILL NOT be waymarked or flagged by the Rat Race crew.

Primary Navigation: You must navigate using the provided GPX files uploaded to your GPS running watch. Please practice loading and following tracks on your specific device prior to arriving in Aberdeen.

Backup Navigation: Your mobile phone navigation app with offline maps is your secondary safety line. The larger screen is crucial for zooming out and re-orienting if you lose the line on the moorland.

If tech is something you struggle with, don’t stress. We will be happy to help with device downloads and mapping apps. We recommend buddying up with a fellow Rat Racer if you are not 100% confident in your own navigation abilities whilst out on the trails.

The Event Director reserves the right to alter the route dynamically due to adverse weather or logistical factors that may affect the safety of the group. Any route alterations will be pushed via text/WhatsApp or communicated directly by the event crew at Pit Stops.

Cut-Off Times & Moving Strategy

Here at Rat Race, we celebrate Finish Lines, not Finish Times. Our events are all about creating extraordinary adventures for everyday people and we want to celebrate everyone’s personal achievement.

However, cut-offs are an important safety mechanism within our Event Management Plan. They ensure that all participants are off the exposed moorlands before darkness, that medical support can remain tightly clustered, and that both runners and crew receive adequate rest to safely tackle the consecutive days.

The Rule of Thumb

To comfortably beat all standard course cut-offs, you must maintain an average moving pace of 5 km/h (approx. 3.1 mph) across the day.

Note: This average pace includes the time you spend resting, eating, or changing gear at Pit Stops. For example, on a 50km day, you typically have a total window of 10 hours to clear the course from the morning start time. Whenever we can be more generous with these times and allow longer for those who need it, generally we will do so.

Strategic Vehicle "Boosts"

If you suffer a minor injury, or simply hit a wall of exhaustion and fall behind the safety window, a crew vehicle will meet you at a designated road intersection to provide a "boost" further up the course. Wherever we can, we are happy to offer this service reactively or proactively.

This means that even if you know you’re not up to the full distance for any personal reason, or perhaps you are just not feeling it, we will always work with you to try and accommodate the best plan for you as an individual. This could mean, for example, choosing to finish early at halfway and pick up again the next day. As this is a non-competitive event, there is no issue with ‘boosting’ and you are welcome and encouraged to pick back up as soon as possible, either the same day or the following day.

LITTER

We need to show that this event has exemplary control of littering. Please help us achieve that. Pack your litter into your pack, pockets, or a nearby bin. Never discard litter along the trails, either deliberately or through failing to carefully pack it away.

MANDATORY KIT

Some of the kit listed is to help you have a safe experience and have the best chance of finishing. Some of this kit is to ensure that if you are unable to continue without our assistance then we can be confident of you having the level of equipment required to keep you as comfortable as possible whilst you wait for that assistance. Some of it is simply to keep you from perishing. It is a serious list, and we know everyone knows this, but we ask that you please do work with us on this. Please do not skimp on kit. The weather even in August is changeable. Spare sets of kit will be worn, you will get wet, and you will want to get dry and comfortable again. As such, do not skimp on kit!

BAGS

We recommend that your kit is packed into three separate areas:

Overnight bag, up to 70L / 15KG: This is your main bag with most of your kit for the trip, including spare kit, evening kit, wash kit etc. We will ask you to bring this out to a designated van each morning and our crew will load it, ready to be taken forward to the next evening’s accommodation. There is a size and weight limit due to limitations of our transporting vehicles and we may check bags if considered bulky and/or overweight. Please do not pack any fragile items or liquids in weak containers as they may leak in transit. Bags should be waterproof as they may be exposed to the rain and may sit on wet ground.

Top tip – make sure you bring a few dry bags, as the Scottish bog will ensure that your used kit will stink!

Pit Stop / Finish Line bag, up to 35L: This is a smaller bag that you will be able to access once throughout the day, usually at lunch and then again at the finish line. In here you may pack warm layers for quick access when you finish, personal nutrition if you wish to supplement what we offer at the Pit Stops with your own personal favourites, and anything else that you may want or need during the day & at the finish line! This includes spare shoes, if for example there is a day that is all trail on the first half and all road on the second half.

Pit Stop bags are NOT mandatory. If you’re happy taking on the day in one pair of shoes and you know that you can fit all the gear you need for the day in your running back pack, there is no obligation to bring one. We are more than happy for you to keep this streamlined.

Running Backpack 10-20L: This is the bag you will keep with you on your person at all times throughout each of the event days. It is essential that you can fit all of the mandatory kit in this bag. We recommend that you train with it before the event so that you know it well and you minimise the chance of kit problems on the day! We recommend using a size of at least 10L for this pack to ensure you can fit in all of the mandatory kit.

To recap – 1 x 70L bag which you will only have access to at the overnight accommodation (15kg max), 1 x 35L will be transported to the pit stops during the day for you and your race bag (10L plus).

We have two key points to emphasize on packing:

1 – We ask that you bring soft duffel bag style packs only. NO SUITCASES. These are generally bulkier, heavier, and more awkward to pack and transport. This goes for your overnight bag and pit stop bags.

2 – Please avoid the temptation to overpack. 3 days worth of running kit should not take up too much room, and you really do not need a lot more than that. If your bags are any larger than outlined above, you have too much stuff and you may regret this when carrying it to your room after a long day on the trails!

REGISTRATION KIT CHECK

Before you are permitted to register or obtain your Adventure Pack, you must present the following items during the onboard ferry check-in. If you do not possess the appropriate kit, you will not be permitted to start. This kit is a vital safety baseline for the volatile Shetland environment. You MUST have all mandatory kit as outlined on the event website.

Clothing & Wearables

  • Running Pack / Vest: Minimum 10L capacity to comfortably carry all daily mandatory kit.
  • Waterproof Jacket: Must feature fully taped or welded seams.
  • Waterproof Trousers: Must feature fully taped or welded seams.
  • Layering: Suitable moisture-wicking base layers and an insulating mid-layer. Bring short and long options.
  • Footwear: High-quality running shoes. Highly recommended: Bring 2 pairs, 1 trail and 1 road. Multi-day bog and coastal terrain guarantee wet feet, so spare socks and an old newspaper will be a good addition to the kit to attempt to dry shoes overnight between use.

Navigation & Electronics

  • GPS Running Watch: Must have capability to download GPX files. The Rat Race team can help you with this if this is new to you.
  • Mobile Phone: Must have a navigation app (e.g., Komoot, OS Maps, Gaia GPS) with all event GPX files downloaded and saved for offline use. This ensures visibility of your backup navigation device even in limited coverage areas.
  • Power Bank: To ensure your phone remains fully charged as a backup navigation tool and means for contact with the event team.
  • Headtorch: A functional, high-lumens headtorch with fully charged batteries/spares. Minimum 200 lumens.

Safety & Medical

  • Survival Bag: Must be a heavy-duty bivy bag, NOT a thin foil space blanket.
  • First Aid Kit: Must include a dedicated foot-care/blister kit, a triangular or conformable roller bandage, and separate sterile absorbent gauze.
  • High-Visibility Gear: Reflective strips, vest, or hi-vis bands to ensure safety during road links.
  • Hydration: Capacity to carry a minimum of 2L of water (via bladders or bottles).

MEDICAL & SAFETY

SAFETY TIPS

There will be many road running sections. Shetland's roads are scenic but remain fully live public highways. You must remain highly vigilant at all times, even if it feels like roads are quiet, they are used and we must all use good road safety and courtesy etiquette at all times.

Visibility: We encourage everyone to wear something high-vis on days involving road running. This may be high-vis clothing, or simply a high-vis strap / bib to wear over your clothing and/or running pack.

Positioning: Run on the right-hand side facing oncoming traffic unless approaching a blind bend. Use passing places to step completely off the tarmac and allow local vehicles to pass safely.

Headphone Policy: Bone-conduction headphones are permitted at low volumes on trails. However, all music players MUST be turned off completely when running on or alongside any public roads. If a marshal instructs you to remove headphones, comply immediately.

EMERGENCY PROTOCOLS & COMMUNICATIONS

In any medical or safety emergency, always call the Rat Race Event Director/Safety Line FIRST. Do not immediately dial 999 unless you cannot establish communications with the event crew.

Why? We have dedicated support vehicles, specialized medics, an excellent understanding of the event route (including access points), and live satellite tracking. In almost all scenarios, our internal safety matrix can reach you significantly faster than standard public emergency services. This is not to say that we cannot or should not engage with 999, however, the first port of call should always be the event team.

Incident Management

Serious / Life-Threatening Incident: Call the Event Director immediately. If you cannot get a signal on that specific network but have "Emergency Calls Only" capability, dial 999 and state your location using your GPS watch coordinates or a What3Words address.

Minor Injuries / Dropping Out: If you experience a minor issue (e.g., minor sprains, severe blisters) or simply wish to retire, please continue moving safely to the next official Pit Stop if possible. Inform the staff there, and they will arrange transport to the evening accommodation. If movement is not possible or is causing you discomfort, call the Event Director and they will intercept you with an event vehicle at the earliest opportunity.

Contact Information: All vital crew phone numbers will be pinned in the event's dedicated WhatsApp group, which will be launched in the weeks leading up to departure. Save these numbers directly to your contacts before arriving at the Aberdeen terminal.

GPS Tracking Systems

Rat Race utilizes top-tier satellite tracking units attached directly to your running pack. There are two main purposes for this.

The primary function is safety and Race Management. It allows our event team to ensure everyone is following the correct event route, and will aid us in advising you if you have wandered off course. Further, in the instance that you or someone near you comes into difficulty, it helps us to find you and get help to you more quickly.

The secondary function is spectator tracking. There will be a public tracking map link generated for family and friends to view your progress from home.

Crucial Note for Friends & Family: Satellite tracking technology is not entirely infallible. Signal drops can occur in deep valleys, or units can temporarily freeze if blocked by heavy gear inside a pack. Please explicitly warn your friends and family not to panic or contact local emergency services if your tracker stops moving on the map. Our dedicated event safety team monitors the tracking matrix constantly. If an anomaly occurs, we have internal protocols to verify your safety. Third-party interference can severely disrupt active event management and waste emergency services’ time.

Insurance

While Rat Race maintains comprehensive public liability insurance, we strongly insist that all participants secure individual Personal Accident and Travel Insurance that explicitly covers multi-sport endurance events, remote wilderness medical extraction, and trip cancellation. This ensures you are fully protected financially should an injury or unexpected circumstance prevent you from starting or finishing the expedition.

TEAM ETHOS

This event is a group adventure, not a race. We expect an exemplary level of camaraderie. Look out for your fellow runners. If you encounter someone in distress, you are required to stop, assist, and communicate the situation to the next available crew member or via the emergency channels.
