Where you will sleep
Your Arctic adventure accommodation includes three nights at Retkeilykeskus in Kilpisjärvi, staying in comfortable ensuite rooms with access to showers, power outlets, TV, a sauna and welcome creature comforts after each day in the wilderness.
For your remote wilderness camp experience, you’ll need to bring a sleeping bag, inflatable sleeping mat (such as a Therm-a-Rest) and a foam roll mat for insulation and comfort. We also recommend packing personal essentials such as a towel, shower gel, casual evening clothes, a phone power pack, and perhaps a book. Sandals or flip-flops are highly recommended too, perfect for relaxing by the fire, around the sauna, and giving tired feet a well-earned break.
Accommodation throughout is provided on a twin-share basis, including our remote wilderness camp where you’ll stay in authentic twin shared expedition tunnel tents. Solo travellers will be paired with another participant of the same sex, while those travelling with friends can request room-sharing preferences via the event details form sent approximately 3 months before departure. Single supplements may be available, please enquire on events@ratrace.com.
What you'll eat
Your Arctic adventure catering includes hearty cooked buffet breakfasts and dinners at the accommodation, with dietary requirements catered for. At the wilderness camp, you’ll bring your own expedition-style freeze-dried meals (we recommend a main and pudding), while we provide hot water, tea, coffee and drinking water.
During the challenge, our snowmobile-supported pit stops will keep you fuelled twice daily with water, salty snacks, sweets and local treats. Each morning, you’ll make your own packed lunch and trail mix from supplies provided, though we recommend bringing any personal sports nutrition or favourite snacks too. Due to the extreme Arctic conditions, you’ll need to carry enough food and fluids between stops, along with an insulated bottle or flask. Vegetarian and vegan options will be available, but those with specialist dietary or allergy needs should come fully prepared.
How we will support you
Throughout, you’ll be supported by our experienced mobile team using snowmobiles, remote pit stops and support vehicles where access allows. Whether you need extra fuel, encouragement, assistance with the conditions, or support in the event of injury or cold exposure, our team is there to help, you’re in very capable hands.
This is a genuine remote Arctic expedition, so you’ll need to be reasonably self-sufficient on each stage, carrying a daypack with food, fluids, spare layers and essential emergency kit. Navigation will primarily follow established trails marked with poles, with a GPX route file loaded onto your self-navigation device as backup, giving you the spirit of real adventure while maintaining confidence in the wilderness. Along the route, experienced local guides and our support team will be positioned at key locations to assist where needed and keep you moving safely through the Arctic landscape.
If you can't make it
Entries may be transferred up to 12 weeks prior to departure in accordance with the Rat Race transfer policy. We strongly recommend taking out comprehensive travel insurance as soon as you book to protect yourself against any unforeseen circumstances. Participants also have the option to add Refund Protect to their booking, facilitated by a trusted third-party provider, which may allow you to claim a refund should you be unable to attend for a range of qualifying reasons.
Adventure mementos
All participants will receive a selection of exclusive event memorabilia to mark their Arctic Circle adventure, including a commemorative event T-shirt, Rat Rag and an epic finisher’s medal at the legendary Three Nations Cairn finish line. These special keepsakes are designed to celebrate your achievement and serve as lasting reminders of one of the world’s most extraordinary winter endurance adventures.
Event Medics
Our events are supported by Trail Med, who provide oversight, planning and participant screening across all of our international adventures, ensuring every expedition is backed by robust medical expertise. On the ground, you’ll be supported by a highly qualified UK medical team of paramedics and/or doctors, carefully selected for their experience in remote and challenging environments.
Rat Race also operates in line with the rigorous BS8848 standard for expedition management, independently audited to ensure the highest standards of safety, risk management and participant care. In short, every aspect of our medical and safety planning is designed with your wellbeing firmly at its heart.
