Day One: Friday

Arrive in Longyearbyen

Your Arctic expedition begins in Longyearbyen, the world's northernmost town and your final taste of civilisation before heading into the wilderness. Surrounded by snow-covered mountains and frozen fjords, we'll spend time preparing for the journey ahead: packing pulks, checking kit, organising teams and learning the expedition systems we'll rely on in the field.

Once we leave town, everything we need travels with us. Good preparation, efficient kit management and teamwork will be key to a successful expedition. By the time we step onto the snow, you'll be ready to venture confidently into one of the most remote environments on Earth.

Key Skills Introduced

  • Pulk packing and expedition organisation
  • Personal kit management
  • Tent team roles and camp systems
  • Stove and fuel operation
  • Cold-weather clothing strategies
  • Expedition communications
  • Emergency procedures
  • Polar bear awareness and safety protocols

Day Two: Saturday

The real adventure begins as we leave Longyearbyen behind and transfer to the remote east coast near Richardsbukta and the Strongbreen inlet. With pulks loaded and skis clipped on, we head into the Arctic wilderness, leaving behind roads, trails and civilisation.

Today is all about learning the fundamentals of polar travel: skiing with a loaded pulk, pacing efficiently, managing layers and establishing the routines that will carry us through the expedition. As we forge our own route across endless snowfields and beneath distant mountain peaks, the scale and isolation of the Arctic quickly becomes apparent.

By evening, we'll establish our first wild camp in polar bear country, marking the beginning of an unforgettable journey through one of the world's last great wildernesses.

Key Skills Developed

  • Skiing with a loaded expedition pulk
  • Efficient pacing and energy management
  • Layering and temperature control on the move
  • Nutrition and hydration strategies in cold environments
  • Rest-stop discipline and expedition routines
  • Team movement and spacing
  • Cold injury awareness and prevention
  • Establishing camp in polar bear territory
  • First-night expedition systems and campcraft skills

Day Three: Sunday

As we journey deeper into the Arctic towards the base of Hollertoppen, expedition life starts to take shape. The routines of breaking camp, packing pulks, skiing, navigating and setting up camp become second nature, helping the team move more efficiently across the vast wilderness.

Success out here is built on small details: managing layers, staying fuelled, keeping organised and working together. As we travel further from civilisation, the team begins to find its rhythm, sharing the workload and breaking trail across untouched snow.

By the time we reach camp beneath Hollertoppen, you'll already feel more confident, capable and at home in this extraordinary polar environment.

Key Skills Developed

  • Efficient camp breakdown and morning routines
  • Pulk organisation and load management
  • Off-track skiing across untracked snow
  • Trail-breaking techniques
  • Fundamental expedition navigation
  • Group communication and teamwork
  • Camp selection in remote environments
  • Snow melting and water management
  • Cold-weather personal management and self-care skills

Day Four: Monday

As we move onto the vast Bakaninbreen Glacier and towards the flanks of Håfjellet, the expedition enters more serious terrain. Glacier travel requires patience, awareness and good decision-making, with hidden hazards, changing visibility and challenging navigation all part of the environment.

Today you'll learn how to move safely across glaciated terrain, work as a team and make steady progress through one of the Arctic's most spectacular and remote landscapes.

Key Skills Developed

  • Glacier travel awareness
  • Crevasse hazard management
  • Safe group spacing
  • Whiteout navigation techniques
  • Bearing and compass work
  • Route choice and terrain assessment
  • Pacing on long gradual climbs
  • Decision-making in poor visibility

Day Five: Tuesday

Today the landscape begins to change as we leave the glaciers behind and descend through the Gustavfjellet Range towards the Braganzavågen sea inlet. Wide valleys, frozen lakes and wind-shaped snowfields create a new set of challenges as we navigate through this remote Arctic terrain.

Descending with a loaded pulk requires skill, balance and careful route choice. With no marked trail to follow, the team must read the landscape, choose the best lines and work together to travel safely and efficiently through the valleys.

Key Skills Developed

  • Descending with loaded pulks
  • Route finding in valley terrain
  • Frozen lake awareness
  • Recognising wind-affected snow
  • Managing cold air in valley systems
  • Safe spacing on descents
  • Choosing efficient travel lines
Snow-covered tents and a low, colourful sun behind

Day Six: Wednesday

Today is one of the expedition's biggest and most rewarding days as we climb over Höganäsbreen before descending towards the Marthabreen Glacier. With glacier travel, exposed terrain and significant elevation gain, this is where the skills and routines developed earlier in the journey really come into their own.

Success today is all about good expedition habits: managing energy, staying ahead of the weather, adjusting layers before conditions change and working together to keep the team moving efficiently through challenging Arctic terrain.

Key Skills Developed

  • Climbing with loaded pulks
  • Skin management and herringbone technique
  • Energy conservation and pacing
  • Weather assessment
  • Exposed camp setup
  • Snow anchors and tent security
  • Stove routines and campcraft
  • Supporting the team during long expedition days

Day Seven: Thursday

As we journey through the Skolten Range, crossing glaciers, valleys and mountain passes, the routines of expedition life should now feel second nature. You'll know your kit, understand your pulk and have developed the habits needed to travel efficiently in the Arctic.

Despite growing confidence, the terrain remains challenging. With no marked routes to follow, the team must continue to navigate carefully, work together and make good decisions, even as fatigue begins to build towards the end of the expedition.

Key Skills Developed

  • Complex route linking
  • Glacier-to-valley travel
  • Ascent and descent transitions
  • Navigation under fatigue
  • Field repairs and personal admin
  • Cold injury prevention
  • Winter first aid awareness
  • Maintaining safe expedition routines late in the journey
Participants sat in snow and gathered around cooking stoves

Day Eight/Nine: Friday/Saturday

Depending on conditions and team progress, we aim to return to Longyearbyen late on Day 7 or during Day 8. The final stage takes us through the valley system and back towards civilisation, completing our journey across the Arctic wilderness.

Although the finish is in sight, the expedition isn't over until we arrive back in town. Strong decision-making, teamwork and good expedition habits remain just as important as they were on day one. As we ski the final kilometres, there's time to reflect on how far both the team and individuals have come since leaving the east coast.

Key Skills Developed

  • Final-day judgement and decision-making
  • Fatigue management
  • Safe travel under expedition conditions
  • Group pacing and teamwork
  • Kit recovery and expedition close-down
  • Expedition review and lessons learned
  • Understanding personal and team progression in the Arctic environment

FAQs

Is the route likely to change?

The very nature of adventure means that the unexpected can sometimes become part of the journey and that is all part of the experience. While we will always strive to deliver “Plan A”, there may be occasions where operational, safety, weather or environmental factors require us to adapt plans and implement contingency routes or alternative arrangements.

As with all Rat Race adventures, participant safety and overall event delivery remain our highest priorities. We therefore reserve the right to amend routes, itineraries or logistics where necessary, using the experience and judgement of our expedition team to make the best decisions on your behalf in changing conditions. Wherever possible, we will communicate any changes in advance. More often than not, these unexpected moments become part of the adventure itself adding to the stories, memories and unique character of the experience.
