TRIP REPORT

SCOTLAND COAST TO COAST 2021

THIS WAS A TOUGH EVENT! MADE EVEN TOUGHER BY MY COMPLETE LACK OF PREPARATION AND I WOULD RECOMMEND TO ANYONE CONSIDERING ATTEMPTING THIS TO DEFINITELY DO AT LEAST SOME BASIC AMOUNT OF TRAINING.

I managed to just about scrape through the initial run and cycling stint based purely on being an avid commuter cyclist and doing a couple of 5k road runs per week. This was not enough to tame this beast of a route in a single day (I arrogantly opted for the one-day challenge) and the final stretch was the killer! Having reached the cut-off point just in time, there was no time to stop and I was thrown off the bike and straight into 14 miles of brutally hilly terrain.

This was the hard part for me – it was an incessant slog and running felt virtually impossible, even more so after I injured my knee a couple of miles into the hills. Nevertheless as darkness was starting to fall, the end was in sight and we made it to the finishline alive and in good spirits (and ready for a pint!).  It was an amazing journey that was immaculately executed and organised in detail by Rat Race, with beyond-helpful staff and volunteers who were friendly and encouraging throughout the day.

IT WAS A WEEKEND THAT I WILL NEVER FORGET AND AM PROUD TO HAVE COMPLETED, BUT I WILL DEFINITELY BE MORE PHYSICALLY PREPARED FOR THE NEXT ONE!
