Being Prepared For Your Session

Here are some Rat Race Urban Gym 'Top Tips' to try help you prepare for your session and to aid your participation ensuring your session goes without hitch and runs as smoothly as possible.
.
Not sure where we meet?
If you're at all unsure of the precise meeting place of your local Urban Gym, we advise printing off a map of the local area available by placing your cursor on 'Locations’ tab at the top of the page and then select your specific branch from the drop down options. We also recommend that you give yourself plenty of time to find the team by arriving at the specified hub location at least 10 minutes prior to the scheduled start time. If you arrive extremely early we suggest that you utilise the designated 'Early Waiting Area', and should therefore take note of your branch ‘Early Waiting Area' before leaving home or the office. We encourage you use this information and take a moment to find the instructor taking your session in order to put a face to a name, and a face for you to look out for once you arrive at the 'Hub Location'! To do this select 'THE TEAM' tab at the top of the page, click on your Hub Location and then scroll down to find your instructor and read a little bit about them.
.
What to bring with you?
Don’t forget your session info gained from the above tips. A mobile phone is always useful, we also recommend bringing a drink, gloves, an energy snack and a rucksack or similar to keep everything in and your hands free.
REMEMBER! The instructors are there to deliver amazing fitness sessions, not to be your locker! If you bring it, you carry it.
Unfortunately meeting up and exercising in the outdoors does have some obvious points for attention to take into consideration before attending our sessions. The main points are that we do not have locker rooms with secure places to store your gear, warm showers to jump straight into after you’ve finished your session or toilets facilities to just nip into when nature calls.
With this in mind our meeting points are also positioned with in a stones throw from many popular chain brands which not only offer a safe haven if participants arrive too early, but toilet facilities to be used before and after sessions such as: McDonalds, Costa Coffee and Starbucks Coffee. With regards to lockers and showers our simple advice is to get changed at work/home, carry your gear with you in a small rucksack, and finally shower at home.
.
What to do with your belongings during the sessions?
If you’re coming straight from work either leave things at the office or leave them in the car. If you’re travelling from home don’t bring anything unnecessary out with you!
For all you Londoners out there! If you simply cannot do any of these options, you will have to carry any gear you bring!
.
What to do with smaller items such as your keys, phone and wallet?
The instructor will happily carry one or two small items for you but remember there could potentially be 20 people in a class so if you don’t need it don’t bring it, the instructor is not your locker.
.
What to wear to the sessions?
We frequently get "hands on" with brickwork, railings, flagstones etc so if your hands are delicate, or tend to get cold, gloves are a must. You will be moving at a steady jog on the city streets, so wear footwear suitable for hard surfaces. Obviously, you will be outside, so your clothes should be comfortable for an hour of high intensity work in the open air, we suggest a bright top and shorts or trousers in manmade fibres, but clothes you won’t mind getting a bit grubby. If it’s wet or windy, bring a windproof outer layer, which will also come in handy for your journey home.
.
What to eat and drink prior to the sessions?
There is no right or wrong thing to be eating, just simply make sure that you have had something to eat prior to attend a session, your normal lunch will be fine. However, turning up for an intense workout session without having eaten anything at all is not advised.
.
What to eat and drink during the sessions?
Carrying an energy bar and energy drink during the sessions is also a good idea just in case you require it.
.
Need the toilet during a session?
The nature of our session’s mean that were not inside a leisure facility with a nice toilet for us to use all of the time however the early meeting area at the branch locations all have these amenities.
.
What is an ‘Early Waiting Area’?
Locations within sight of your ‘Hub Location’ where, if you arrive really early you can use to keep warm and feel safe until others arrive. You should therefore take note of your hub locations 'Early Waiting Area' before leaving home or the office.
.
Identifying your instructor.
All our instructors wear the new lime green Adidas ‘Terrex’ garments for every session.
.
What if my instructor isn’t there?
Don’t forget to check your local Facebook page for last minute information or news on any local problems that might affect your session running (such as bomb threats, tube delays, etc). Please also bear in mind that our instructors work within a strict session format that requires them to leave on time and will be unable to wait around for people that are lost or running late! Are you in the wrong place? It’s always a good idea to print of the map on your branch page of this website, so you know exactly where you’re going. Failing this you can also try contacting your local Urban Gym franchise manager using the Local contact details at the bottom of your branch page.
